The “Hubby” Edition :: Issue #002

Howdy!

Since the last missive, I switched from Mad Mimi to MailChimp (in short, it’s better). Hopefully the transition went smoothly and everything is working correctly.

In other news, I am looking for uniquely skilled volunteers to guest blog for Blazenfluff (ideally on a regular basis). Some knowledge of publishing in WordPress is helpful. If you think you’ve got the right stuff, shoot me an email with your interest.

Also, if you’ve got a suggestion of something to be featured in a future edition of this newsletter (which I swear will be given its new name soon), drop me a line.

p.s. Want to navigate the everchanging social media landscape with skill and finesse? Need a website/blog set up in WordPress? Want to start your own digital newsletter? Perhaps you’re an influencer with a decent following and want to take it to the next level. I can help. Hire me.

Thanks to Petrina Robins for snapping this awesome photo of SJ and I at the Church of 8 Wheels roller disco in San Francisco. If you’ve never been there, you GOTTA check it out.

Events of note

‘Borg Like Me’ Bay Area book tour

Borg Like Me and Other Tales of Art, Eros, and Embedded Systems is the new self-published book by author, cyberculture pioneer, and former denizen of a hippie commune, Gareth Branwyn. It’s getting awesome reviews!

Mark your calendars: I’m excited to report that Gareth will be traveling to the Bay Area this month for a short book tour. Thanks to the help of Mikl-em, he’s secured a reading at The Long Now Foundation’s Interval Cafe in San Francisco on Sunday, Oct 19th at 4pm. It’s a free public event.  He’s also looking into Borderlands sci-fi bookstore as for another reading. Word has it that there will be an East Bay house party. Will spill deets on that when I have more info.

Fair warning: If you’re in the area and you DON’T make time to come out for one of his events, I will totally think less of you. At the very least, support him by buying his book. 🙂

Personal side note: Gareth and I have never met in person but have a running joke on Facebook that if we are both still single in the year 2020, we will get married. If you ever see us use the hashtag #arrangedmarriage2020, you’ll now know why. Of course, we’re not really getting hitched in 2020…OR ARE WE?! Stranger things have happened. Stranger things have happened to ME.

La Carrera de los Payasos! (The Running of the Clowns!) [Pasadena, CA]

This GuerilLA event is like Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls but with clowns running around in the alleys of Old Town Pasadena (SoCal) instead. The fun happens on Sunday, October 26th from 2 pm to 5 pm. Non-scary clown attire recommended. Thanks, Heather!

Who’s up for a field trip to SFO to see this exhibit?!

A bunch of us are meeting THIS Saturday 10/11 at 2 PM in front of Ebisu (at SFO inside the Food Court in Terminal G) for some sushi and then we’ll visit the exhibit (Departures-Level 3). It’s all pre-security, so no need for an airline ticket or a TSA patdown.

It’s a small world

Because reading is sexy

Our community’s own Chris Taylor has gone and written a book. It’s titled How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise and it follows the Star Wars series “from the difficult birth of the original film through its sequels, the franchise’s death and rebirth, the prequels, and the preparations for a new trilogy.”  He was on NPR!

Because giving is sexier

If you know me in real life, you know this newsletter and my blog, Blazenfluff, are both labors of love for me. You’ll also know that promoting my community’s great projects is deeply fulfilling to me on an emotional level but not yet on a financial one. I literally spend dozens of hours every month putting these communications together for little-to-no financial reward. It really makes no sense for me to continue, except I know I am making a difference to many other “starving artists,” makers, geeks, nerds, and creators out there. Your supporteven for the small amount of $5/month— could not only help feed/house myself and my kiddo but help others who dare to create a more beautifully absurd world. We all want THAT, don’t we?
