Artist-in-residence: June 2015

 by Erika Jane Amerika

“I’m a self taught artist from Lubbock, Texas currently living in Austin. My artwork is described as imaginative, surrealistic, low brow, gothic, with references of humor, pop culture, cinema, and literature, and a heavy dash of country and Texas references…. I like to call it Amerikan!

This piece was commissioned for Sean of Vinnie’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn by his lovely lady Mandy. I think he had a great birthday. They love Rick Moranis….and pizza, can’t say that I blame them!
I do originals and also love to do commissions…. so remember this gun’s for hire! but there is a growing waiting list so get on it! erikajaneart@gmail.com

yeehaw!”

“These days, everybody wants to be an outsider, politically correct to a fault. That’s good. I hope you are working to end racism, sexism, ageism, fatism. But is that enough? Isn’t being an outsider sooo 2014? I mean, maybe it’s time to throw caution to the wind, really shake things up, and reinvent yourself as a new version of your most dreaded enemy — the INSIDER. Like I am.” —John Waters

Picasso’s napkin“There’s a great story about Pablo Picasso. Some guy told Picasso he’d pay him to draw a picture on a napkin. Picasso whipped out a pen and banged out a sketch, handed it to the guy, and said, ‘One million dollars, please.’

‘A million dollars?’ the guy exclaimed. ‘That only took you thirty seconds!’

‘Yes,’ said Picasso. ‘But it took me fifty years to learn how to draw that in thirty seconds.'” via
