’twas the night before KRAMPUS..

Gentle readers,

Sooooo…I went on an epic road trip to Los Angeles with my awesome, kitsch-tastic friend, Jessica Lindsey of Kooky Kitsch. I was so honored to join her, as it was her 50th birthday trip. 😀

The highlights:

Stopped in Santa Nella for our Thanksgiving pea soup meal. The only turkey was the inflatable kind.

The new contemporary museum in town, The Broad, is DEFINITELY worth checking out.

We visited with our friend Allee Willis at her “Willis Wonderland” home and scoped out her fancy-gold sneakers which she’ll be wearing to the Broadway premiere of The Color Purple (she co-authored it!).

The illustrious Mark Blackwell met up with us at the newly-renovated Clifton’s for drinks. It’s fantastic, he’s fantastic. You have to see this place to believe it! (I mean, listen, there’s a neon sign underneath the floor and a giant Redwood in the middle of it all.)

Parked in front of Wacko was L.A.’s pink-pop icon, Angelyne. This sighting was moments before I thrifted real good, scoring a pair of brand-spankin’-new John Fluevogs for just $8!

Is there a German word for when your child fits into adorable vintage clothes (like everything Gunne Sax!) and shopping for vintage clothes becomes a thrill again? Because, that.

We met up with Susan Olsen* and friends at another L.A. darling, home of the chubby-checkered dude in overalls, Bob’s Big Boy.

Here’s an unsolicited tip: If you’re in L.A., go to the Krampus L.A. events this month!! And, the Broad! And, Clifton’s! And definitely, Velveteria!

Wuht? You’ve never heard of Velveteria? WELL, it is an amazing MUSEUM of VELVET PAINTINGS. I kid you not! BLACK VELVET for DAYS.

You should go visit it…fast.

We spoke with Caren, one of the owners of the museum, and she alerted us that it will only be open for 10 more months. WTF. By this time next year, the Velveteria will be no more. It’s worth a visit, I swear. Cross my heart and hope to… 711 New High St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Also, please welcome Janelle Hessig as December’s artist-in-residence!

A request from my friend Elliotte: “A group of badass ladies I’m part of are putting together bags to hand out to homeless folks during Santa Con. We want to make it more than just a huge raging pub crawl, and help people in need. We want to provide toiletries, clean socks, a non perishable snack, pads, tampons etc. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated. If you have anything you would like to contribute, please let me know. We’re putting them together on Dec 10. Thanks!!!!!”

December Artist-in-Residence: Janelle Hessig

Men are from Mars...Women Need to Stay Off That Space Dick
Men are from Mars...Women Need to Stay Off That Space Dick
Men Are From Mars, Women Need To Stay Off That Space Dick is a mini-comic celebration of vulnerability and a portrait of enduring optimism in the face of adversity. In other words, it’s about dates.

It also serves as a sneak preview of my upcoming comic collection ‘Rotten Philosophies’, due out in 2017.

p.s. Special Offer for Rusty’s Electric Dreams readers! $1 off your purchase from the Gimme Action table at the East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest on December 12th when you drop the top-secret code word: “FLUFF”.

Janelle Hessig was born on a dark and stormy night in Contra Costa County. It was Groundhog’s Day but she did not see her shadow on the way out. She remained in the Bay Area to become a comic artist, writer, musician, filmmaker, and townie. Having discovered the secret of life early on: stinklines + flies = superior art, she went on to apply this fantastic knowledge in the creation of numerous fanzines, comics, and other publications, beginning with Tales Of Blarg in 1991. In 2014, she founded the publishing company Gimme Action.

HEY YOU
If YOU would like to co-curate an issue of Rusty’s Electric Dreams, I’d love to hear your idea! Please email me: rusty@blazenhoff.com.Know about a cool event? Share it. I’ll do my best to include it in the next issue.

“Long before the circulation of any postcards standardizing the image, the isolating Alpine terrain of Krampus’ native habitat encouraged strong regional variations. And without any grounding source text to nail down his appearance, the original Krampus would have been a shapeless bogeyman defined only by oral tradition, a freeform figure variously described by parents and other storytellers. Like the Tooth Fairy, he had a definitive function, but no definitive form.”
