Staying gold…

Just back from an epic road trip with my desert-dwelling bestie, HeathervescentFrom Vegas to East Jesus and all points in between, we managed to cram a week’s worth of sightseeing into about 50 hours. We went for Desert X**, the Neon Museum, and Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart, and ended up experiencing a whole lot more. To sum it up: aggressive art viewing FTW! Full-length gold cape not optional.

**Pressed for time, we opted out of Desert X this round and headed, instead, to the Salton Sea area for our art fix (Salvation Mountain, Slab City, East Jesus, and Bombay Beach). Amazingly, as I was flying home over Palm Springs, I spotted Nicholas Galanin’s Desert X piece, “Never Forget,” from my window seat:

As seen on the Internets

Variety: “Standing onstage in an oversize plaid jacket, a mop of curls draped over his face, strumming his ukulele as he sang ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’ in a trilling falsetto quaver so high it sounded like he was being tickled and tortured at the same time, he was like a troll and a little girl in one body — a flower child who was also a come-hither vampire.” [Trailer]

Real books you can actually read: yay!

The End of the Golden Gate: Writers on Loving and (Sometimes) Leaving San Francisco

Indie Bookstore Day was this past Saturday, so I thought I’d share some book picks with you.

1. John Law, Margaret Cho, W. Kamau Bell, Daniel Handler and several other Bay Area writers contributed to The End of the Golden Gate: Writers on Loving and (Sometimes) Leaving San Francisco.

2. I Scream for a Clown by D.J. Sæther :: Cacophonist alert! This was written by one of us (under a pseudonym) and is sprinkled with Cacophony references. Written for the middle-grader set, it’s a fun read for all ages, described as overflowing with “intrigue, grit, adventure, joy, and delightfully quirky jokes.”

3. World Travel: An Irreverent Guide was “assembled by one of Bourdain’s associates, Laurie Woolever, based entirely on his previous writings and an hourlong interview conducted shortly before his death.” — NPR

4. Penny: A Graphic Memoir by Karl Stevens :: For cat lovers: “Reading like a highbrow Garfield, this unique dose of sardonic wit and cat content combines humor and storytelling with Karl Stevens’ very realistic illustration style.”
