Fernweh…

I’m baaaaack…

Italy was fantastic. HUGE GIANT CRAZY GRAZIE to my jetsetting friend Carolyn Anhalt for gifting me miles to take an amazing, life-changing momcation to Tuscany (and beyond) with her. I finally got to stay at her home in Tuscany, which…oh…is part of an 11th century church.

When you step out of her front door, this is what you see. I kid you not. A frickin’ 11th c. church TOWER.

No really, here’s the front door. I was standing there when I took the shot of the tower.

And this is behind the building. Yes, that is a cat (that’s “la gatta,” for you locals) and a VINEYARD. Because, Italy.

Pieve di Cerreto, arrivederci for now. I will see you again.

Adventures in Online Dating: Hey Princess

“What I take deep delight in are the oddballs. The guys who can’t be serious but put it out there, hard and weird, to see what might happen. Like this message I got one day: ‘I am drunk, alone, and at walking distance from you….. why not having some in-and-out playful time…. kumbaya kumbaya..’

WHY NOT INDEED?

Or…three women I know got this message:

Hey Princess,
I’m inviting you to a sensuous 5-way pot-and-mushroom fueled orgy! Bring friends,
Love,
Daddy

The three of us all chose separately to respond, found out on facebook about the others, and compared notes. The person who first posted responded with generosity, like a sane and caring person, explaining that this isn’t the best way to treat or approach women. And got back the answer I hate with a passion: it’s a numbers game, this works 1 out of 10 times (REALLY? Those numbers have to be wrong) and he’s going to keep right on trucking. I despise the cold call, all for that sweet moment when they find that special someone who enjoys impersonal sex with weirdos. I originally wrote someone “with low self-esteem,” but fuck that. No slut shaming here!

The second respondent went with the ice-cold-shower deepdish snark of, ‘I’m allergic to pot.’

(Imagine the words drawn out and accompanied by a glare of pure contempt).

And me? ‘I suckerpunch dudes who call me princess.’ And what do you know? No answer.”

Milkfed Press' Victoria Heifner

This has been a really fun month, and I’m really grateful to have been able to participate.

I’m currently working on a series of prints inspired by side-of-the-road fruit stands. Here’s a sketch, with letterpress prints coming out before the holidays.
I do love to collaborate, and have a few prints left of my special project with famed “Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary: cartoonist, musician, sign painter and all ’round charmer, Justin Green. He and I shared our love and concern for Bees, and came up with this.

His art, my letterpress skills. If you can’t live without it, you can buy one here: http://milkfedpress.bigcartel.com

Thanks again for following along and feel free to find me on the internets @milkfedpress.

“Signora, between Austria and Italy, there is a section of the Alps called the Semmering. It is an impossibly steep, very high part of the mountains. They built a train track over these Alps to connect Vienna and Venice. They built these tracks even before there was a train in existence that could make the trip. They built it because they knew some day, the train would come.” –Martini, Under the Tuscan Sun
