Issue #057 :: The “On this day in 2004” Edition :: 11:04:2015

On this day in 2004…

I woke up thinking I had died. After an epidural didn’t “take,” I was knocked out cold for an emergency C-section. When I woke up, I was a) drugged beyond belief and b) in a big room of empty hospital beds. No baby, no nurse, and the only thing I could hear was the white noise of the inflatable blanket on top of me. I wasn’t scared, but it surprised me that death was so…familiar.

As the drugs started to wear off, I began to wonder if I was still pregnant. Many questions ran through my head, like, “Maybe they don’t have an operation room open?”

Quite a while later, a nurse came over to me. “How are you doing?” I asked when I’d be going in for surgery.

“Oh, honey, has no one brought you your baby yet?” That option hadn’t occurred to me.

Next thing I knew, Scarlett Jane was by my side. She still is. I’m a lucky lady.

Happy 11th, baby girl!
