December Artist-in-Residence: Janelle Hessig

“In recognition of a sometimes challenging time of year, here is a “ghost of comics past” regarding tradition.” (more)

— Janelle

Janelle Hessig was born on a dark and stormy night in Contra Costa County. It was Groundhog’s Day but she did not see her shadow on the way out. She remained in the Bay Area to become a comic artist, writer, musician, filmmaker, and townie. Having discovered the secret of life early on: stinklines + flies = superior art, she went on to apply this fantastic knowledge in the creation of numerous fanzines, comics, and other publications, beginning with Tales Of Blarg in 1991. In 2014, she founded the publishing company Gimme Action

If YOU would like to co-curate an issue of Rusty’s Electric Dreams, I’d love to hear your idea! Please email me: about a cool event? Share it. I’ll do my best to include it in the next issue.

“I was a very nervous kid, I was very anxious all the time when I was younger. But what’s nice is that… some of the things I was anxious about don’t bother me at all anymore. Like, uhhh, I always thought that, uh,quicksand was gonna be a much bigger problem than it turned out to be.

Because if you watch cartoons, quicksand is like the third biggest thing you have to worry about in adult life, behind real sticks of dynamite and giant anvils falling on you from the sky…

I used to sit around and think about what to do about quicksand! I never thought about how to handle real problems in adult life. I was never like, ‘Oh, what’s it gonna be like when relatives ask to borrow money?”

Rusty’s Electric Dreams is a weekly inbox zine by Rusty Blazenhoff. These personally curated missives are beacons to signal and celebrate the global tribe of weird, wonderful, and “different” people (“the Others“).
