December Artist-in-Residence: Janelle Hessig

Ian Baldridge gave me that billy baloney! Urkel was rescued from some guy’s “booty hut” by Brontez. Sarah Bailey made Prince”  –Janelle

Sooooo, for Janelle’s next-to-last week as Artist-in-Residence, I thought it would be fun to ask her a few questions… Enjoy! –Rusty

RB: How did you score your job at Last Gasp?

JH: I had to pass a rigorous series of tests such as being able to write down 10 dick jokes in 5 minutes, find a sewing needle in Ron’s beard, and escape from a locked tank filled with Zippy The Pinhead backstock.
RB: Did you ever have a “regular” “corporate” job?
JH: I’ve had a couple of jobs which required me to wear business casual drag, but none were too corporate/bureaucratic. I dream of being a BART driver though and making big money pushing buttons. “Toot! Toot!” There’s another $50!
RB: If you could give your 21-year-old self five words of advice, what would they be?
JH: Write everything down or else
RB: How old is your inner child?
JH: He’s 12.
RB: If you were to describe yourself as a hobo sign, which one would it be?

(Get Out Fast)
RB: Ass, gas, or grass?

JH: Gas – I want to hit the road!

Janelle Hessig was born on a dark and stormy night in Contra Costa County. It was Groundhog’s Day but she did not see her shadow on the way out. She remained in the Bay Area to become a comic artist, writer, musician, filmmaker, and townie. Having discovered the secret of life early on: stinklines + flies = superior art, she went on to apply this fantastic knowledge in the creation of numerous fanzines, comics, and other publications, beginning with Tales Of Blarg in 1991. In 2014, she founded the publishing company Gimme Action

YOU DECIDE

My jetsetting friend Carolyn Anhalt travels to places most of us will never will, including the Middle East where she works part time. Recently, she’s been focusing her Instagram feed on the unusual (to Western eyes) things she sees. This photo of hats of Kurdistan’s tribes was taken at the Kurdish Textile Museum in Erbil, Iran. [I have to admit this photo got me thinking…were hacky sacks inspired by these designs? :)]
